This training guides practitioners new to the process of working with children and adolescents with a history of sexual victimization. While there is training on the topic of child sexual abuse and sexual abuse treatment, few trainings include and address the needs of the treatment provider within the context of sexual abuse counseling. As a former director of a sexual abuse treatment program, an adjunct professor, and a clinical supervisor, Dr. Constance DelGiudice has witnessed firsthand the discomfort, hesitancy, and avoidance of many practitioners when it comes to approaching and treating sexual abuse. This presentation will expand upon aspects to assess and build within yourself as a treatment provider within the process of counseling survivors of sexual abuse, as well as provide essential foundational knowledge surrounding sexual abuse counseling. After gaining the tools necessary, this presentation will then provide a step-by-step guided approach that walks the therapist through sexual abuse counseling— allowing for and promoting the inclusion of evidence-based treatments. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to…
- Identify significant cultural trends and influences that impact the process and the outcome of counseling sexual victimization in youth.
- Identify critical ethical and legal components surrounding counseling youth presenting with sexual abuse.
