In an empirical study examining over 85,000 family court cases in Hawaii, MacDonald and Chesney-Lind (2001) found that charge seriousness impacted female and male adolescents equally during early decision-making in the court process but, once a male reached disposition, he was “likely to be more harshly sanctioned than his female counterparts” (p. 189)
