Training Description
This On Demand training introduces four assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): (1) the PDD Behavior Inventory (PDDBI), (2) the PDD Behavior Inventory – Screening Version (PDDBI-SV), (3) the PDDBI Autism Spectrum Disorder Decision Tree (ASD-DT), (4) the PDDBI Adolescent Normative Data Supplement.
The training will discuss autism in detail, including– its diagnostic history, differential diagnostic issues, basic demographics, prevalence, and early signs. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of subjective vs objective assessments of behavior will be covered.
First, the history of PDDBI, a norm-referenced assessment tool, will be described in detail, following the manual. Case examples will be provided to help the user interpret the many derived scores, and examples of published research studies carried out by the author and others who use the PDDBI will be provided.
Second, the PDDBI-SV, a tool that assesses social interaction problems and social interaction skills, will then be discussed, with a focus on the instrument’s scoring criteria and application using case examples.
Third, the ASD-DT, a screener developed using machine learning techniques to help differentially diagnose cases such as ADHD that have behavioral features that overlap with ASD, will be reviewed and case studies will be provided.
Lastly, we will discuss development and standardization of the PDDBI Adolescent Normative Data Supplement, which enables the user to assess adolescents with ASD.

Trainer Biography
Ira L. Cohen, PhD, received his PhD in Psychobiology from Rutgers University in New Brunswick in 1974, under the supervision of Michael R. D’Amato, PhD. He became a National Institute of Mental Health Post-Doctoral Fellow at NYU Medical Center in 1975 with a specialty in Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychopathology under the supervision of Lowell T. Anderson, PhD. He was a senior Research Scientist, former Head of the Division of Behavioral Assessment and Research, and Chairman of the Psychology Department at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities. His research interests are in autism and include the genetics of autism (including Fragile X syndrome), early detection, diagnosis, computer models, and behavioral assessment. Dr. Cohen is the creator of the PDD Behavior Inventory. Dr. Cohen has given over 200 presentations on autism and has authored or co-authored over 120 research articles and book chapters on autism and related disorders. Dr. Cohen is a member of several professional advisory boards, is on the editorial board of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders and is a member of the advisory board of the journal, Open Access Autism. In addition, Dr. Cohen has served as a member (and, recently, co-chair) of the Consensus Panel for the Development of Clinical Practice Guidelines on Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorders for the New York State Board of Health.

  • Describe how discrepancies between parent and teacher T-scores can be used to inform diagnosis
