Training Description
The prediction of violence risk in youth is key to the development of effective risk management plans. The most commonly-used and widely-researched instrument for violence risk assessment in adolescents is the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY). Composed of evidence-based risk and protective factors, the SAVRY follows the Structured Professional Judgment approach to risk assessment and has been found to predict violence in both boys and girls in the community as well as institutions across the globe. Presented by the co-developer of the SAVRY, this On Demand workshop will train you in the use of the SAVRY while earning 7 hours of valuable Continuing Education Credit.
The development of the SAVRY will be discussed, item-by-item instructions will be given on how to reliably score the measure and interpret its findings, a review of the peer-reviewed research on the SAVRY will be provided, and guidance will be put forth on how to apply SAVRY reporting conventions. Case studies will be employed to allow you to practice using the tool and to learn to avoid common administration errors. Trainer Biography
Patrick Bartel, PhD is the co-developer of the SAVRY and practices forensic clinical psychology in Canada.  He is a Senior Psychologist at Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services of British Columbia where he conducts court-ordered assessments with adolescent offenders and is responsible for clinical supervision and program development. Dr. Bartel has developed expertise in the area of assessment and management of risk for violence and sexual violence with children and adolescents. He is actively involved in applied clinical research, has presented workshops and papers at numerous international conferences and provides training to mental health and correctional professionals. He also offers clinical and research supervision to graduate students and is a Clinical Associate of the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University.
