Training Description
In this case consultation, experts address an array of therapeutic modalities and interventions pertinent to treating clients with a history of trauma. Of specific focus is the issue of attachment and how it can be either beneficial or detrimental depending on its type and strength. For example, insecure forms of attachment may exacerbate symptoms of trauma, whereas secure attachment may mitigate such symptoms. The role of parents in modeling empathy and attending to a youth’s experience in perpetrating sexual abuse is discussed, as both empathy and attunement have been found to effectively aid in the expression of unresolved guilt and shame.
Trainer Biography
Sally Gulmi, MEd is Assistant Vice President, Program Director, and Clinical Director of the Stetson School in Massachusetts, an affiliate of the Seven Hills Foundation. The Stetson School is an integrated therapeutic residential treatment facility for boys, offering a planned treatment environment where family members are a vital part of their child’s recovery. All youth are assigned a clinician, case manager, and a residential advocate. At admission, an Individual Crisis Management Plan is developed, and periodically re-evaluated to provide a basis for the management of behavioral issues that may arise during treatment. The residential care environment provides around-the-clock structure and supervision while members of the interdisciplinary treatment team provide an environment that supports behavioral and emotional safety.
