Training Description
The prediction of recidivism risk and the identification of criminogenic needs are key to evidence-based practice in correctional settings. Published by Northpointe Inc (www.northpointeinc.com), the Correctional Offender Management Profile for Alternative Sanctions (COMPAS) is a 22-scale actuarial risk assessment tool intended to assess risk for general offending and violations across offender populations. Completed via a computer-assisted assessment, the COMPAS contains static and dynamic risk factors and incorporates self-report, official record, and interview information. Presented by the lead developer of the COMPAS, this On Demand workshop will train you in the use of the COMPAS while earning 6 hours of valuable Continuing Education Credit.
The development of the COMPAS will be discussed, instructions will be given on how to reliably score the COMPAS scales and interpret their findings, a review of the peer-reviewed research on the COMPAS will be provided, and guidance will be put forth on how to apply COMPAS reporting conventions. Trainer Biography
Tim Brennan, PhD is the lead developer of the COMPAS. He completed his doctorate in Educational Psychology at the University of Lancaster and is currently the Chief Scientist at Northpoint Inc., where he runs the Research and Development Department. Regular lecturer for the National Institute of Corrections and former Associate Research Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder at the Institute of Cognitive Science, he is also a Visiting Scholar at Georgia State University. Dr. Brennan’s research interests include risk assessment, classification, judgment and decision making, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. His recent research has been published in journals including Criminal Justice and Behavior and Criminology & Public Policy.
