Training Description
Evidence-based practices for the assessment, management, and monitoring of adult sexual offenders are constantly evolving and improving. This ATSA Master Class will examine leading international approaches to reentry and community management, with special attention paid to methods of increasing the efficacy of such programs. In the first half, myths concerning rates of sexual offending will be refuted, and the importance of structured assessments for both evaluating risk and identifying treatment targets will be discussed. Predictors of treatment readiness, motivation to change, and quality participation will be identified, and the role of community members. In the second half, the history of sexual offender community supervision in California will be discussed as an exemplar of statewide practices. Case studies which received national attention will be highlighted, and the impact of legislation and efforts to revise state policy to concord with evidence-based best practices will be investigated. Finally, vicarious trauma and the impact of supervising sexual offender caseloads will be explored, and supervisor self-care strategies will be discussed.
Trainer Biographies
Robin J. Wilson, PhD, ABPP is a researcher, educator, and board-certified clinical psychologist who has worked with sexual offenders in hospital, correctional, and private practice settings for more than 30 years. Dr. Wilson has published over 100 scientific articles, book chapters, and monographs in addition to maintaining an international practice based in Florida. Past President of the Florida Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers, Dr. Wilson has served as an expert witness in many Court proceedings and as a member of law enforcement panels regarding community risk management. In addition, Dr. Wilson is a certified trainer for the Static-99R, STABLE-2007, and ACUTE-2007.
Brenda Crowding, MA is Chief Deputy Regional Parole Administrator with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Division of Adult Parole Operations, Southern Region. Ms. Crowding has served as Coordinator of the California Sex Offender Management Board and as Co-chair of the State Authorized Risk Assessment Tools for Sex Offenders Review Committee. In addition, she has sat on the Governor’s High Risk Sex Offender Task Force, the Governor’s High Risk Sex Offender and Sexually Violent Predator Task Force, and the Sex Offender Supervision and GPS Monitoring Task Force. Ms. Crowding was the recipient of the ATSA Faye Honey Knopp Award in 2015 for her contributions and dedication to the field of sexual offender supervision and treatment.
