Training Description
Working in the criminal justice system presents unique professional challenges for women. This 1.5-hour webinar will explore issues related to the experiences of women working with male criminal justice clients, and gender-related challenges encountered by women working in criminal justice professions. Case studies and clinical examples will be used to explore common professional challenges, including addressing boundary violations in the working relationship, the impact of pregnancy, enhancing workplace and personal safety, and managing common workplace gender dynamics. This will be relevant for both female professionals and for male supervisors and colleagues looking to increase their understanding of the experiences of women in order to provide gender sensitive supervision, training, or collegial support.
Trainer Biographies
Dr. Laura Jakul is a registered psychologist practicing in the areas of clinical and forensic psychology at Forensic Psychological Services, a collaborative community-based practice specializing in work with individuals in conflict with the law. She completed her clinical residency at the Yale University School of Medicine and graduated with her Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. Dr. Jakul’s forensic experience includes violence risk assessment, treatment for high-risk offenders, evaluations for fitness to stand trial, evaluations for mitigation based on substance abuse in capital murder cases, substance abuse assessment and treatment, and assessment and treatment for developmentally delayed offenders. She has previously provided psychological assessment, consultation, and treatment services in a wide range of hospital, correctional, community mental health, and school settings. Dr. Jakul currently works with adults and adolescents with sexual and aggressive behavior problems, histories of trauma, substance abuse problems, and major mental health issues.
Dr. Bobbi Walling is a registered clinical and forensic psychologist with Forensic Psychological Services, a collaborative, community based private practice that specializes in a range of assessment and treatment services for a high-risk, high need population of individuals with sexual, aggressive, and antisocial behaviour problems. Dr. Walling completed her clinical residency at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto in 2010 and received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Manitoba in 2012. Dr. Walling’s experience has included psychological assessment, treatment, and consultation services in hospital, correctional, and child welfare settings, community mental health centers, and schools. She has experience in the assessment and treatment of trauma, anger, mood and anxiety related concerns, and child and adolescent behaviour problems and she provides a range of assessment services, including forensic/risk assessment, parenting assessments, and assessments of cognitive and adaptive functioning. She currently provides services to children and adolescents and their families and adults with a range of mental health and behaviour problems.
