The identification and monitoring of criminogenic needs is key to case planning and management for sexual offenders. The Sex Offender Treatment Intervention and Progress Scale (SOTIPS) is a dynamic measure used to assess risk, treatment and supervision needs, and progress among adult male sexual offenders. Increasingly used in community and residential (including civil commitment) settings, the SOTIPS is designed for use by trained mental health professionals and probation and parole officers. Ideally, the SOTIPS should be used in combination with a static risk assessment tool such as the Static-99R (www.gifrinc.com/static-99r) or the VASOR-2 (www.gifrinc.com/vasor-2). Presented by the instrument’s lead developer, this workshop will train you in the use of the SOTIPS while earning 8 hours of valuable Continuing Education Credit. The development of the SOTIPS will be discussed, item-by-item instructions will be given on how to reliably score the measure and interpret its findings, a review of the peer-reviewed research on the SOTIPS will be provided, and guidance will be put forth on how to apply SOTIPS reporting conventions. Case studies will be employed to allow you to practice using the tool’s coding manual and to learn to avoid common administration errors.

Trainer Biography
Robert J. McGrath, MA is the lead developer of the SOTIPS, VASOR-2, and ROSAC. Former Clinical Director of the Vermont Department of Corrections integrated network of prison and community sex offender treatment programs and past President of the Safer Society Foundation Board of Directors, Mr. McGrath has over 30 years of experience providing clinical, consulting, training, administration, and research services focused on the assessment, treatment, and management of individuals who have committed sexual offenses. He has provided training and consultation services to mental health, criminal justice, and victim advocacy groups in over 40 states and throughout Canada, Europe, and Asia. He has served on treatment advisory boards and accreditation panels for the national sex offender treatment programs in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. In the United States, he has consulted to 10 sexual violent predator civil commitment programs and numerous prison, probation, and parole programs. His over 50 research publications have been supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Justice, Center for Sex Offender Management, and Corrections Research at Public Safety Canada.
